If you are not familiar with the term domain name, it is the “root” address of your Website. Every Web page has a specific address; i.e. www.vistaworks.net/index.htm is the home page for the VistaWorks Website. “Vistaworks.net” is the domain name. All pages in the VistaWorks Website have an address that starts out with: vistaworks.net (“www.” is optional and a subject for another discussion). All domain names end with one of several suffixes (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .gov, .edu, etc). The ubiquitous“dot-com” is used to designate COMmercial sites.
Where do we start? There are so many reasons! Here are just a few:
1. Image – your-company-name.com just seems to be expected of all professionals on the Net
2. Conciseness – your Web address will be shorter: www.your-company.com instead of www.my-company.com/your-company
3. Permanence – your domain name is your property and therefore your Website address is permanent, even if you change hosting services.
4. Email Address – your email address is also permanent and independent of your choice of Internet Service Provider, and your address is far more identifiable with your company name: your-name@your-company.com
5. Search Priority – there is a slight advantage in getting good placement in search engine returns if you have your own domain name
6. Good Names Going Fast – it is already difficult to find a good descriptive domain name that has not already been taken. Thousands of them are being registered each day. That means, each day that goes by, your choices are reduced.
If you don't have a Website yet and you are not quite ready for one ... no problem. You can register a domain name now and put it on reserve for your use whenever you are ready. If you wait until you are ready to register your domain name, your favorite name may be taken.
